If you have a smartphone, you likely have a digital wallet where you can store electronic copies of your credit cards, debit cards, event tickets, boarding passes, and even some forms of government ID. Now, many insurers have made it possible for you to carry a copy of your pink slip in your phone’s digital wallet, too. This means you’ll have one less piece of paper in your wallet and easy access to your pink slip at all times.

What information is included in a digital pink slip?

A digital pink slip is an electronic version of your motor vehicle liability card, which includes details such as the name of your broker and insurance company, your policy number, the make, model, and year of your vehicle, and your policy’s expiration date.

If your insurer offers digital pink slips, you can download yours and store it in your phone’s wallet. Once you’ve downloaded it, you don’t need to be connected to a network or Wi-Fi to access it — you can access it at anytime from anywhere, as long as you have your phone with you.

Does a digital pink slip replace my physical copy?

Since you can face a fine if you can’t provide proof of insurance at the scene of a collision, it’s important to have your pink slip with you at all times when driving. If you opt for a digital pink slip, you don’t have to carry a physical copy with you. However, if you have a digital pink slip, you’re responsible for making sure your phone battery is always charged and working in case you need to provide your information to a police officer or to another driver. To make sure you always have a copy on hand, you can choose to carry a digital and physical pink slip with you just in case.

What do I do if I let someone else drive my vehicle?

When you lend your car to someone, you’re also lending them your insurance, which means they need to be able to produce proof of insurance for your car if asked. With a digital pink slip, you can simply email a copy to the person driving your car, or you can print a copy for them to use.

Are digital pink slips valid in every province?

Currently, drivers can use digital pink cards in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. If you’re travelling to a province that doesn’t allow digital pink slips, you’ll need to carry a paper copy.

Is a digital pink slip secure in my phone’s wallet?

Your digital pink slip is secure in your phone’s wallet and doesn’t present any privacy concerns. It can’t monitor you, track your location, or collect or disclose your personal information without your knowledge and permission.

If you’re worried about handing your phone over to another person to give them your information, don’t be — if your phone is password protected, you can show your pink slip on a locked screen to prevent access to other personal information. On many phones, you can access your pink slip in your wallet without entering your password by double clicking the lock button, but this may vary depending on the type of phone you have.

How do I get a digital pink slip?

Contact your account manager at Newman Insurance to learn how you can download your digital pink slip and to ask any additional questions you may have. Or submit a request online to have your liability slip sent to your mobile phone.
