According to a recent article in canadianunderwriter.ca, “as schools across the country prepare for re-opening in September, skittish parents who are not in favour of in-class learning for their children are setting up so-called ‘pandemic pods’ to home-school small groups of children in the home.”

As reported by Katie Dangerfield of Global News, “a pandemic pod involves inviting a small group of children — a pod — into the house to learn together. The parents, on rotation, can educate the children, or they can pool together funds to hire a tutor or teacher.”

Although these seem to be a great way for children to socialize and learn in a group setting, parents may not realize they’re exposing themselves to potential lawsuits should COVID-19 be transmitted within the group. This could also be very costly as their Homeowners insurance policy will likely not defend or protect them as it excludes liability coverage for claims arising from the transmission of disease.

These are unprecedented times and homeowners should be very cautious with hosting any type or event or gathering in their homes during this pandemic. If you have any questions about your policy, please contact us by telephone or email.
